Description
There is something sacred about sitting around the table with family and friends during the Christmas season and telling stories. Some of those stories have been passed on through the years and have been polished with all of the craft and flair of a classic novel. There is drama, tragedy and comedy in these stories, some of them true, some are true with adjustments and other are completely fiction but with an important message or meaning.
The fact is, we rehearse the memories of Christmas year after year. They bring us back home and surround us with the people we love and have loved us. The telling of stories is one of the most precious gifts we can give each other. Stories draw the generations together, and become part of the family treasures and traditions.
When I was a kid, my family would all gather around the the Christmas tree early Christmas morning. As much as I would have loved to tear into the presents, our tradition was to read together the nativity of Jesus’ birth from Luke 2. The reading of the story grounded us as a family and brought us into the home of God, a stable for animals. It expanded out world to include outsiders like the shepherds and the grand mystery of the reality of angels who also celebrated Jesus’ birth. Reading the story brought everything else into focus.
Throughout the years I have been privileged to server churches that loved stories. And so, every Christmas I would create a family Christmas story for the season. Some were just read, other presented at a readers theater piece or as a play. This collection of short stories is intended to bless you and the people you gather with at Christmas. My hope is that you will take some time to read them out loud to your family. And make sure that some time during the Christmas season you read together the story of Jesus’ birth.
